Learning Experience 4 Slow Down

This is about a tactic I like to use when it seems like my life is getting hectic and out of control. Especially at TCU, there is such an emphasis on being involved and if you have down time, you're probably doing something wrong. Which is really unfortunate as having down time every once in a while is crucial to making sure your mental health is in a good spot. When I get really stressed over anything and it feels like life is going at 1,000mph I think back to this fishing trip vacation my grandpa and cousins took to Canada. We took a pair of hopper plans to get to this lodge way out in the middle of nowhere, Canada. Cell phone service was so bad they only worked when you were inside. At night, if all the lights were out in the house, it was so naturally dark that you couldn't see your hand an inch away from your face. I've never breathed oxygen that pure before. It's as if you were constantly breathing through an oxygen tank 24/7. We'd go fish in the mornings, and as I would look around the water inlet and valley, I felt like I was in a national geographic magazine. In the afternoons we'd either go back out on the boat after lunch or go hike the Canadian wilderness, trespassing on sasquatch's territory. You felt so far removed from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, it seemed like we were in a different world all together. But it wasn't a different world, it was only a 3 hour trip from the heart of Seattle, Washington. When life gets wild now, I like to think back to that trip. It helps me to relax and puts me at ease that up there right now somebody is experiencing the same feeling I had. Time seemed to stand still up at the Nanook lodge in Canada, and it still is right now. No matter how messed up life can seem right now, nothing can mess up that lodge in Canada.

  1. That's a super cool story, and I think it's a fantastic stress-relieving tool. At the very beginning of the coronavirus panic, I spent a weekend in the middle of nowhere in Texas, and it was the most relaxed I've been throughout the entirety of everything going on. I definitely wish I could go back there right now, as I'm sure you could use a trip to Nanook lodge as well!
